This is the latest development in the Singapore media industry. Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts Lui Tuck Yew announced that R-21 movies will not be screened in cinemas situated in the heartlands but rather it can be found in the cinemas in town area and online (VOD).
This to me is significant as it indicates that government are opening up to wishes of citizens by giving them more autonomy while keeping the control balanced using the new technology available. Instead of an overarching rule, there are leeways given in view of new technology emergining. This is crucial as time progress, government should constantly review existing regulations to ensure it is up to date.
However, it will not lift the ban on the 100 websites, citing its symbolic significance to Singaporeans in terms of racial harmony and equality. This is nothing new. At least the gesture it counts.
