Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA).
Quite shocking frankly speaking to have US coming up with a Parliamentary ACT like this one on the bright early morning of Sept 21, 2010.
Never see it coming nor see it approved in the 1st place.
To me, it actually infringes on the very 1st Amendment of US, the freedom of speech.
COICA requires all websites to do self-censoring, otherwise they will be at risk of being obliterated from the very being in cyberspace.
Without any further questions, if found to have infringing materials, the whole website will be shut down in the name of copyright infringment.
Another issue that arise is US has double standards of governance. On one hand, it protests China from banning the websites and commercial uses eg Google, claiming that it obstructs commercial development. Now, it does the same thing and claims that it is for the benefit of commerce.
Now, how weird is that?
It marks also a distinction from the usual US ACT. Why? The normal ones are very specific and held in context. But this new ACT is overarching and generic. Nobody knows when are they going to get entangle in it.
