In reply to a helpless mother (Article found in Lianhe Zaobao, 26/5/2005)

This morning, my mother draw my attention to this article in the reader's forum. She said a girl has a similiar plight as me.

Here is the brief summary of content of the article.

A girl who has taken her "A" level got her Chinese "A" a "D".
(Big matter to us!!!)
She expected a better grade and so do here teachers and friends. (same here!!!) She is a good student too.
(yeah so am I).
Nonetheless, she still applied to various local Uni in hope of getting in.
(me too!!)

But in the end, she was rejected by the local Uni even though the admission requirements are relaxed.
(me too!!!! very sad and disheartening to us, I am sure!)

Her mother even beg the the MP for it.
(Nah, this is the point of divergence. My mum din even bother. She thinks no point and it is me who coz my downfall.)

Now her daughter dare not go out and face the world.
(Well, I did went thru this phase. I hung my head low when I go out and keep myself shut in my house most of the time. I feel inferior to others especially my peers. I am still so, seriously and honestly.)

Her mother is at lost on how to deal with her daughter.

After breezing thru the article again, I feel...WOW!!! I had a similiar experience but I wasnt to that extent of depression.

Here is wat my advice is, if YOU, YES, YOU, gal who make ur mum worry or anyone who is close to her seen this, tell here the following.

There is absolutely NO point, NO POINT in mopping ur head over something that is already in the past.

Get ON with ur life. Ur life wun stop here. You still have a long way to go. Why stop urself over an obstacle which may seemed large to you at this moment?

Start to think and plan ahead. An Obstacle may force you to chage current plans but IT will NEVER obstruct ur big plans.

Here is what I did, hopefully, it will be of reference to you.

I cried to myself to sleep and think and pountd on the reason why I got it all wrong. Yeah all wrong, coz I got all "D"s including my best subject, chinese. This period is very important. You frustrate all ur bad feelings then kick it aside like a cleanser. Wipe it off.

I think of the jobs that I can do this moment and I find myself not prepare to face the world as yet. Whic means studies is still important to me!

Fine, the I ask myself. Do I want to go SIM or Local Uni since I got a full cert? Moreover, my JC dun 1 me anyway and I never 1 that kind of school life anyway.

I think the answer will be local uni since I pick a fall there and WAT else!! Those who reject me Shall admit me in GRACE!!!! No nid for red carpet but the "气势" must be there.

With this aim in mind, I know, it will be the private candidate route and it is not ez for me coz I have one Science subject which requires lab work.

I got several friends in the same situation as me who enrolled themselves into private schools which have labs to do lab work. Yeah, I go and check out who din make it and comfort myself that I am not the only one and that Failure is nothing, it can happen to anyone, even the clever ones.

Then I realise regimented life not for me coz me still afraid to face others and think I would see their despising faces. So I stay at home and study. I check out all the neccessary including the private candidate registration date, the syllabus to see if there is any change and check out who is still in my old JC to render some help in case I need it. I no longer see it just as my studies but a war which I wage against the local institution and exam system. IF this is the hurdle I have to crossover, so be it. I need to strategise it and make it work and win for me! I WANT TO WIN IT IN GRACE! I set myself a timetable and follow it so that it means I am like in school studying but in home environment. It is a bit of bad method coz my slight depression and fear of people did not get cure. It worsened.

My mum supported me throughout the process even though she blame me for my downfall. My dad is the one who truly oppsed say me waste my time and wun make it anyway. My mum fight for me and I feel touched. very very touched. I wasnt on good terms with mum then, I was defiant. But the setback make me realise and open my eyes to a lot of things that I have taken for granted including my mum. However, I sat at the dinning table every meal with my head hung low after that. I din earn any $$$ and I cant do the basic for them that is excel in my studies. I live my life for that year in disgrace.
Yeah but dun think my parents are that bad lah. Just a front. Who dun like their kids. But one thing is that, they din foot my exam fees again. I had to folk out nearly 500 backs to do all five subjects again. You hear me right, I DID ALL FIVE SUBJECTS AGAIN!!

I do all the ten years series again, going through the notes I have and read through them with more details. As for Chinese, I tried to find all the possible areas that I might have did wrong like my lit not good. I memorise that again and again, constantly. Who says no need to memorise? IT IS BULLSHIT!! You still nid the main points to write. AS for The other part my chinese lang, I am good at it so I din do much juz read through the vocab and newspapers.
Guess wat?!! I wrote my 1st piece of chinese compo only during the exam for the year and able to do so sia. Heng!!!

For the science subject, I give up the lab work, juz memorise the stuff needed for lab and that's it. I reinforced in other areas fpr that subject. Wat for waste time on things that wun yield you any good marks.
For GP< my weakest also, I send my essay from my friend, 3rd sis, for her GP teacher to mark. I endure his teasing also. I bear it wif good grace and even send him a bar of good chocolate with a cheeky note.
All thanks to my dear sis, my best 3rd Sis!!! even though we have sum misunderstanding bcoz of it but we clear it!!!!
my GP ah, agin, I realise I am good at compre and bad at compo.

Then I made a visit to my old JC to see my CCA teacher who kindly helped me with my work. But when the pricipal who walk pass saw me in home clothes. She scold my teacher and even scorn me for not doing well, first time round.

C'mon, who will alwaz do well so smoothly all the time. It is not that I duno my work but you staff's way of explaination is horrible. They have diff treatments for good and bad students. I find that I can study better without their help and dun need to see their bad faces to demoralise me! IF not for my good good teacher, I would not go back!

Then for my lab exam. IT is scheduled at my old JC and the HOD of Sci at that time look at us in contempt. Coz she recog some of us were former students. I duno if that is my misconception or wat lah, I find that annoying and disgraceful!

Then I sat my exam with best wishes from mum. Very importnat to me. Without her support, I wun make it so far. I discuss my work with her even though she din have much education. I tell her my worries, my fear, my obstacles and she analysed for me in chinese lah.. She have read the papers so know more than me. She is a good mum. she even brought me lunch while I need to sat for my next paper on same day as the one b4. She has to travel so far.

I hung my head low for the whole year. Cut down my trips outside. No KTVs, NO shopping trips, No fun. I need to get my own $$$ to get books and pay my fees so I give tuition. To a private candidate for "O" level. I tried to help her. Heopefully, I help her lah.

When exam results are about to release, I couldnt sleep. I couldnt eat. I couldnt even read my fave books. My mind keep repeating the errors that I have make during the exam. When I accessed the results thru net, I was overjoyed. My Chinese got a golden "A". The rest all improved greatly except for my Sci subject. Stagnant at "D" lah. Expected. no labwork means no "A". I cried over my results laughing and screaming at the same time. I knew I did it and won the battle against the instituions and system. "以其人之道,还其人之身".That day, I have to give tuition. For the first time in that year, I held my head high and take a deep breath as I step outside. I wasnt that bad afterall. I am not useless.

Joyfully, I applied to all Uni including SIM and SMU. That means I have to slog for the SAT at that time. I went for it anyway. I did it quite ok. Then SMU called me for interview and I actually passed that gritty meany interview. It is very very tough, I assured you. Unless you have full confidence of urself, they will squirm on you!!! After going thru so much, I dun think that is a problem. I have proved to myself. my former chinese lit teacher who a bit belittle me was surprised that I did it too. i am now in one of the top schools, graduating soon.

All I want to say is this. Think for yourself gal. What do you want to do in the future? If you want to continue studies, by all means do it. Think of the different alteratives and plan. Planning is important. and so is determination. Family support is important but you have such a caring mum so should not be a problem.

Set aside all ur unhappiness and fear. They will obstruct you. Have no fear and concentrate in ur goal and you will succeed.

Anything, u can reach me by this website. Will be glad to talk to you.

For the rest of my friends and sisters, Sorry to make you read such a long piece. I juz had to say my piece here. I feel the same feeling arise again when I read the article. hehehee....This is my true feeling even though you all kind folks never belittle me but that kind of feelings still there. I am wary of you for that time. I feel so inferior so disgraceful and still feels so today. That's the impact that the whole stuff still have on me. I am still treading on thin ice even today. I care for my studies more than any of the outings. Sorry to fly u the planes so many times. Thanks for supporting me!!!!

So grateful!

I dun blame any1 or anything for my fall. I may hate the edu system at that time but now, I think it is a phase I need to get thru and the edu system are more humane and closer to my ideal one.Wish I can go back and do it again to do my exam in this kind of environment where I can get to choose. I think it is a good time to cure my cockiness.

Guys, dun try it ah...U nid to think of ur NS and no time to repeat ah... I have seen guys who slogged so hard in the day and struggle to revise in the night.

Thats all, Good Day to all then!!!!

:P

And that independence is exactly what makes people pursue you.

Your Life Path Number Is 1

1

Your Life Path is is characterized by individualist desires, independence, and the need for personal attainment.

The purpose to be fulfilled on this Life Path is that of becoming independent.

This is a two part learning process; first, you must learn to stand on your own two feet and learn not to depend on others. After you are indeed free and independent, you must learn to be a leader.

Many of our generals, corporate leaders, and political leaders are men and women having the Life Path number 1.

You always have the potential for greatness as a leader, and you may fail as a follower.

Many 1's spend most of their lives shaking off their dependent side.

When this happens, there is little time left for enjoying the rewards to be gained through independence.

You may have to overcome an environment in which it is very easy to be dependent - and difficult to be independent.

You have an abundance or creative inspiration - and possess the enthusiasm and drive to accomplish a great deal.

Your drive and potential for action comes directly from the enormous depth of strength you have/

This includes both the physical and inner varieties of strength.

With this strength comes utter determination and the capability to lead.

As a natural leader you have a flair for taking charge of any situation.

Highly original, you may have talents as an inventor or innovator of some sort.

In any work that you choose, your independent attitude can show through.

You have very strong personal needs and desires, and you feel it is always necessary to follow your own convictions.

You are ambitious, and either understand or must learn the need for aggressive action to promote yourself.

Although you may hide the fact for social reasons, you are highly self-centered and demand to have your way in most circumstances.

If you are not fully developed, you may express the negative side of your number.

That means your demeanor may appear very dependent rather than independent.

If this is the case, you are likely to be very dissatisfied with your circumstances and long for self-sufficiency.

On the strong side of this negative curve, the 1 energy can become too self-serving, selfish and egotistical. Over-confidence and impatience are the weak side of your Life Path.

One night in Beijing

Last nite, when my mum and I watched the JTeam's " Happy Hour", one of the team sing the "One night in Beijing". Erm, I must say, it is not uniform and not sharp enough lah, but good try since so many people singing at the same time. Then My mum quiped in that makes me nearly want to drop to the floor from the bed lah.

Mum:"Yucks. Not very nice leh. Hua, tomorrow, you sing for me hor. I realise you sound much better than them."(translated from Chinese lah)

So does she mean that I do sound bad initially? And that after comparison, I really do sound better especially for the female wayang part?Wah...... :P

Then I remember last year I went to KTV with Eugene, Isa and Kexin. I did that song once. Then Eugene did the male part lah....hehehehe.......I think i got three black lines down my face hor? '''. .'''

But, heng, she never ask me to do it, this morning....Heng ah....!!! :P

David Tao: the Great Leap 2005

hahaha....My fave CD of the moment...Big Thanks to XinXin...Thanks for buying this CD at a really cheap price.....Luv Ya.....

This CD is produced after the Trilogy ones on Dave's life and a collection of all the Trilogy as summation of his life.

Yup this is the cover of both the China and the local version

Moving on, He produced this CD to relfect on his current life and his views on certain things. Initially, I din think that it is really that nice but subsequently with the lyrics, I can feel the power behind it. Man! A world of Difference with and without the lyrics.

I recommend the following songs if you have the time, not in order of preferences. Do try to listen!!!

1.Ghost

Very realistic song. I like the rythmn and the lyrics. And oh yes, the MV as well.

2.The Art of War

Duno why...I seem to fave songs on war leh. Like Jay Chou's "zi Zhan ZHi Shang". I also find this song very very pleasing to my ears and echo my sentiments.
3. Who do you love?

This is one of the hits that the local radio stations recommend but I dun think that Dave is only at his best when his do sentimental songs lah. Honestly, if you hear his other fast-paced song, you will like it lah. But I have to say, he does have his own way of expressing the sentimental songs as such it touches your heart. :P

4. Sula & Lampa

This is another one of the interesting songs, man! got to listen to it. It is fun.

Yup. Another thing is that the original copy is a copy control CD lah. So there is no way u can make another "friendly" version!!! Anyway, C'mon, this CD is worth buying lor. Trust me!

Oh, one last thing is that there is a China version and a local version of the CD. The China version is cheaper but it does not have the song, "Ghost". You know why lah, Becoz The Chinese Government ban the song. Due to the MV. Too Grisly is stated as the reason and corrupt minds of kids. Abit play on the mentality of people lah...I do get a scare initially. Hehe :P

The Finale of The Amazing Race 7

Whoa! I secretly enlist my bro's PC to record down this joyous moment as Uchenna and Joyce won the Amazing Race 7, throwing Rob and Amber to the backwater.!!!!! hahahahaha...that is the fun part realli!! U can see the couple in better light after they help Meredith and Gretchen with the boats, showing more compassion than other teams do. Ron and Kelly with their bitching and breaking down of relationship worsen and their hopes for winning the race. While the sneaky and scheming Rob and Amber could clearly show their tiredness after a long race.

The best part is when Ron and Kelly use the schemes on Rob and Amber who have used b4 and now it is their retribution. hahahaha.....!!!!!

I like the part where Uchenna and Joyce have to beg for $$$ and Uchenna being a man has the ability to calm his wife down and continue with the race. His determination is unbelieveably good!!!!I admire him for that!!! His honour at insisting that the taxi-driver, shows his integrity!!! Nice man!!! Must be a good father too!!
That is the end of TAR7!!!! I wish I can see more of TAR8 soon!!!

Death

Recently, there are quite a few well-loved ones are dead. One of them is that late ex-President of Singapore Professor Wee Kim Wee. I still remembered him as a kind old man, well-loved my Singapore citizens. It is very sad to see a great man die even though it is the cycle of nature. Duno if it is Mr Wee's fortune or Mrs Wee's misfortune, it is very very sad to see ur soulmate be gone before you do. I can feel the pain that Mrs Wee suffered. I am a bit shocked that MM Lee also shed tears during the service. I know it is natural to cry but I will never expect a strong man to cry too. No wonder we have a chinese saying that strong man do not shed tears until he is thoroughly depressed.

Next is this piece of news. We have all hear of the famous Ad dog, Lucky. It is so cute and adorable but alas, he died as well. Here is the excerpt from "The Sun":

THE dog who starred as Lucky in TV insurance ads has died aged 12.

The family pet, real name Benson, had battled cancer for months.

Lucky appeared in 20 ads for More Than insurance over four years.

A company spokesman said: “He will be truly missed.”

News interesting for me!!

1. Birthday of Homeopathy father -- Hahnemann

Malaria row inspired homeopathy

Taking arnica for bruising or apis mel for bee stings has become second nature for many people.

But few of those with homeopathic remedies in their cupboards know that they have a German physician to thank for the remedies.

This weekend, supporters of homeopathy are celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of Samuel Hahnemann - the man widely accepted as the founder of homeopathy.

Homeopathy today is one of the most popular and widely used complementary therapies with about 100,000 physicians using it globally.

Medical

In the UK today there are five NHS homeopathic hospitals and the global sale of homeopathic medicines represents more than £1bn globally.

But the very concept might never have been discovered had it not been for Dr Hahnemann, who was born in Meissen, Germany, in 1755.

Fight like with like

Dr Samuel Hahnemann

After training in sciences and botany he qualified as a doctor.

But he soon became dissatisfied with the medicine of the day, feeling that the purges and bleeding of the period were excessive and harmful.

He was so disillusioned that at one stage he even quit medicine to work as a translator.

But, ironically it was while translating medical texts that he made his biggest breakthrough - the realisation that taking quinine to treat malaria produced the same symptoms as the illness itself.

Dr Hahnemann found a piece by another doctor, Cullen, who was examining the use of quinine (which he referred to as Peruvian Bark) to treat malaria - or Marsh Fever as it was then known.

Dr Cullen said the bark was successful because of its astringent and purgative properties.

But Dr Hahenmann took issue with this. He argued that other medicines had the same properties - but had no effect on malaria.

To prove his point, he decided to experiment with quinine, taking the drug himself.

The results were to prove hugely significant.

Key idea

According to John Saxton, president of the faculty of homeopathy which promotes the academic and scientific development of the discipline, they effectively laid the foundation stone for the creation of homeopathy.

Hahneman put the patient as an individual at the centre of healthcare

Johjn Saxton

"He took a dose of Peruvian Bark - four drams - and developed all the symptoms of malaria apart from the fever.

"For as long as he continued to take the bark, he had the symptoms and when he stopped it, they stopped.

"It set him thinking."

Dr Hahnemann came to the conclusion that it was the very fact that quinine produced symptoms so similar to malaria itself that made it a useful medicine - in effect he discovered that like can be used to fight like.

As Dr Hahnemann said himself: "Every effective drug provokes in the human body a sort of disease of its own, and the stronger the drug, the more characteristic, and the more marked and more violent the disease.

"We should imitate nature which sometimes cures a chronic affliction with another supervening disease, and prescribe for the illness we wish to cure, especially if chronic, a drug with the power to provoke another, artificial disease, as similar as possible, and the former disease will be cured: fight like with like."

Inspiration

Dr Hahnemann also became involved in experimenting in diluting substances, including poisonous metallic elements mercury and arsenic.

His aim was to derive their benefits, while avoiding their side-effects.

His ideas spread quickly following the publication of his book The Organon Of The Medical Art in 1810, which attracted both admiration and hostility.

Dr Frederic Quin brought the idea of homeopathy to Britain and the British aristocracy became early admirers.

In 1849 Dr Quin founded the London Homeopathic Hospital (now the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital).

This is due to be reopened next month following an £18m refurbishment.

To celebrate Dr Hanhnemann's anniversary there will be a number of events throughout Germany as well as an exhibition on him and his followers at the British Homeopathic Association and Faculty of Homeopathy's offices.

Mr Saxton said: "Hahnemann put the patient as an individual at the centre of healthcare and believed that factors in a person's life, such as emotional influences, had a fundamental impact on their well-being.

"That was revolutionary thinking then and it still sounds very relevant to us today."

2. Love is in the air

By Thomas Kielinger

In Windsor

German journalist Thomas Kielinger visits Windsor to observe the town's preparations for the forthcoming royal wedding and finds a less jaundiced view of the occasion than that displayed by the British press.

It is a strange sensation for me to be actually standing at the foot of the statue of Queen Victoria with Windsor Castle's imposing structure right behind it, and to muse about the event that has captured the world's attention for weeks and months - if not years - the marriage of one Charles Philip Arthur George Windsor to his bride, Mrs Camilla Parker Bowles.

People have been rushing to buy souvenirs of the wedding

So inured are we to the constant drip-feed of salacious news from the production line of the Windsor saga that I, for one, am having a hard time liberating myself from the mass of media coverage and developing something of a coherent view of what this event might betoken for the monarchy and its subjects.

Pondering my plight, I chance into a souvenir shop on Windsor High Street, where I browse around the bric-a-brac of royal memorabilia to knock my thoughts into shape.

The first thing that strikes me is that nowhere is there a single item with Camilla Parker Bowles alone on display. She is on sale only in conjunction with her new husband, never on her own.

Whereas Diana Spencer, unforgettable Princess of Wales, beams at you from hundreds of items sparkling with her uniquely iconic lustre.

Humbled and enlightened

Thus, for starters, I can't help asking myself if the British people will ever forgive Charles and Camilla for the role they played, willingly or unwillingly, in Diana's sad undoing.

Charles and Camilla will honeymoon in Scotland

Can people ever be comfortable with King Charles III and Queen Camilla, when someone with far more glamour and charisma might still be commanding the nation's rapt attention?

It doesn't take long before the lady at the till in the Windsor Craft and Woollen Centre despatches my doubts with a vengeance.

"They are so well matched, aren't they?" Mrs Dillon divines, in true vox pop fashion.

Not a word of remonstration or backward-looking does she utter as we descend into a proper psychoanalysis of the royal couple.

I feel both humbled and enlightened at the hands of my guide. As a media person, I am congenitally wedded to the view that newsworthiness comes mostly from things that go wrong, rarely the other way around.

This wedding in particular is a case in point - lurching as it did from mishap to mishap right up to the last days of the preparations, when a ghastly security breach at Windsor Castle was exposed by a tabloid newspaper.

The media have had a field day doing the two protagonists down.

As a matter of fact, I have rarely seen such malicious glee on display in the British newspapers.

Saving paradox

But Mrs Dillon, bless her, is totally unfased about all this negative hullaballoo.

After all, it is people like her who determine the way ahead for even an ancient institution such as the monarchy.

Love Actually was the most successful British film of 2003
And what is the demotic password my goodly lady has come up with? Love, actually, as in the film of the same name starring Hugh Grant, Keira Knightley and other screen luminaries.

Love, actually, also seems to save the day for Charles and Camilla in the eyes of other people I talked to after I had emerged from my education lesson at the hands of Mrs Dillon.

Quite a paradox, when you come to think about it.

It has been said that the Royal Family is mired in dysfunctionality and that the only person really up to the "top job" is its current holder, the Queen, who has stayed the course with exemplary stoicism, albeit at times somewhat inflexibly.

After her the deluge, more or less. Charles' erratic curriculum vitae did not bode well for the future of the monarchy.

Well, what do you know. Now steadfastness rules the day, the very elevating spectacle of a couple true to their love over many a decade.

Dysfunctional? Let the media learn to adjust their radar screens.

Here is one story that has, against all odds, come right, through the slings and arrows of outrageous missteps, blind alleys and cruel misjudgements.

Peace, finally

Yes, of course, Diana was a victim, of her own machinations as well as at the hands of others, including these two happy-enders.

But as a legend in their own right Charles and Camilla have emerged with the paradoxical virtue of long-lasting fidelity.

Dysfunctional? I should think not. Anything but.

In Germany, to where I report, the royals are sometimes adored beyond all reasonableness, just as in Britain they are often unreasonably debunked for their remoteness from ordinary life and their own higgledy-piggledy lives.

Well, at least with this couple you can forget about both fawning and debunking.

Camilla seems a supremely natural and down-to-earth woman, a boon for the monarchy because of the very absence of that double-edged attribute, celebrity, which so overwhelmingly characterised Diana Spencer.

In turn, I see in Charles the contours of a man finally at peace with himself. Love, actually, may be the greatest strength of this much-maligned prince.

What an outcome of a life story so far riddled with, nay, mangled by tragedy. Who would want to wish the royal couple anything but continuing happiness?

In the first place, if Charles love Camilla so much, shouldn't involved third party, Diana. Should have married b4 then. Afterall, now it is back to "CC" (not cycle and carriage) and not "CD"(not Christian Dior)

"Naked Weapon"

Tonite on channel U, this show by Maggie Q, Anya, Cheng Pei Pei and Daniel Wu caught my attention. Rather that watching the charity show which I consider the stunt that they perform a bit meaningless. (You know the part of Jack Neo "licking" the fan. Hello, You are HELPING charity not to self-inflict wounds to yourself that's being given by your parents.)

I thought this will be a nice substitute after watching the 1st ten minutes of the show. But unfortunately, I know why it is the box office poison for theaters (not so for the star's fans!!) The part of training and killing off mates is gory and unimaginable. Tis is actually the exciting part of the show. Later, move on to Maggie Q being a assassin known together with Anya as "the china Dolls". CIA has a record and an agent on it. Daniel Wu again. I wonder y CIA has a part on it? Not interpol or FBI. Weird.

Then you know ah, the practise of commercialism is getting so rampant that it is similar to Hollywood. One scene on the two leads running into the Magnum ice-cream truck. It is so prominent and obvious. Y not WAlls? Y not Haagen Daz? Then came the part on how Maggie Q ran out of the truck. the delivery boy was stung. This is so clique of a TV ad of Magnum or product.

It obviously tried to target at the Westerners. Daniel Wu, Cheng Pei PEi and Maggie Q speak excellent, US english. It also placed Taichi in it. The power of temple and the prayers to goddess, having a wish coming true, granted by goddess, meditating and the Chi field of a person. Have you seen the ads by the Guiniess i tink? on cantonese movies were power come from the palm of the swordman????that u can fight using the bottles hanging in mid air? The scene reminds me of it, except that more sophisticated.

On the whole, it is a great disappointment to me. The ending even ridiculous. A japanese guy (Lien Kai) suddenly came in and killed Maggie Q's boss and best fren. Some more the guy is from Hong Kong lor....can tell one....

Then i go and read some comments and i get the gist after reading and not from watching.

Then I take a look at the scriptwriter : Wang Jing. No wonder lah....so crappy.

Anyway, here is a picture of it

Yakuza Fever!!!

Though it is a Saturday, I still have to go to school for a project presentation. I slept at 6am in the morning because there are alot of editing to be done. I simply cannot trust the rest of the gals. It has been a long time since I do this stuff so a bit rusty.

My project title is " Shadowy Reign of the yakuza: Tokyo and Globalisation".

Sounds cool huh? But a lot of stuff needs to be done. I found out to my horror, I woke up at 820am instead of 7am. I had to miss the tech run with my groupmates. Worse still, Qin haven send me her part and I haven finished editing. We overshot by a lot of words. So I send them the copies so that they can make amendments while I try to travel to school.

Luckily, by the time I reached, it is juz about to start. I am late for 15mins. The first team took so long. Then subsequent teams have no time to complete. My frenz laughed at me for being a train coz I rush so fast. C'mon, the lecturer flashed 1-min placard right in your face lor. Can you not hurry up?

Yakuza with their tattoos

Oh, as for those of you who duno, Yakuza are Japanese secret society members / gangsters.

Final note: I find the picture below very hilarious.

Film industry in Singapore

Recently,I have been focusing on Hong Kong film industry as my research project. So here are so extra news locally from my school magazine, HOOKED.

Enjoy!

A Sneak Peak at the Cinema Industry

Contributed by Melissa

Monday, 04 April 2005

Lights, camera and action! HOOKED gives you the lowdown on some of the inside tidbits of the cinema industry. And whilst it is not the glimmer and glamour that people would expect, it really is a whole new world.

In our little island of Singapore, there really is not much to do. It is thus not surprising that going to the movies is one of our favourite past times.

How often we have caught ourselves chit-chatting about how hot Brad Pitt was in Troy, how cool Keanu Reeves was in the Matrix and oh, how a must-watch the Lord of the Rings was.

Really, who can deny that friendships were formed, bonds were reinforced and even love was found in that 2 hours spent in a cinema hall.

Yes, cinemas have always been and probably will always be a great part of our lives.

The question is, as people grow busier, and the televisions grow bigger, and err, the fare to Johor Bahru grows cheaper, how many of us find ourselves forgetting the simple joys of spending time in the cinemas?

Really, my dear friends, it’s time indulge in a box of popcorn, prop up your legs and join us here at HOOKED for a little trip down memory lane as we rekindle that passion for the big screen and perhaps in the process pick up a tip or two as to our options when watching movies.

DID YOU KNOW?

1) That there is a difference between an exhibitor and a distributor?

An exhibitor is one who shows movies at their cinemas

A distributor is the company who goes to the film festivals to scout for new movies for their companies following which he buys the franchise to the movie and sells the right to show the movies to the exhibitors.

2) That piracy and parallel imports are the biggest threats to the cinema industry in Singapore?

Thankfully the government has stepped up and controlled the problem so our friendly cinema companies can keep their rice bowl and movie goers still have a place to watch movies.

3) That the real money is not in the selling of movie tickets?

According to industry sources, the real money comes from the sale of popcorns and other food and beverages. This is because exhibitors (i.e. the cinemas) only get to keep about half of the income from the ticket sales, the other half goes to the distributors. This is as opposed to the sale of food, where the cinemas get to keep all the money.

4) That the industry is going digital?

For many years, all cinema exhibitors make use of the standard 35mm film reels (see feature below on projection room). However, as technology has improved, the world of make-belief. The use of digital technology to replace the usual film reel technology will be the next big thing to hit the market.

5) That for the exhibitors, its not just as simple as screening the movies?

A lot of work goes into deciding when and where to screen the movies. A programmer is hired just to decide what is the best time to screen a particular movie, which cinema hall to screen the movie and how often to screen the movie. Really, you have to milk a good movie for what its worth, but there is also an art as to how to do that.

6) Who the major players are?

THE MAJOR PLAYERS

SHAW BROTHERS

Status: Both distributor and exhibitor

Locations: Jurong, Century Square (Tampines), Chua Chu Kang, Balestier, Bugis, Prince/Jade (Beach Road) and Lido.

Famous for: Bringing to Singapore Lido, one of the greatest hangout places for us students. Thank you very much.

Busiest Days: Weekends

Booking Options: Box-office ticketing and online booking via credit card at http://www.shaw.com.sg

Look Out For: A leaner, faster and meaner online booking system coming your way. It will not only cater to credit card users, but also accommodate students who do not have credit cards by coming up with newer booking options.

HOOKED’s verdict: The cinema company which gave us greatest the feeling of being at home. The Shaw cinemas are the best places to bond. Lido, is as always, a great student hang-out place, nobody can doubt that.

GOLDEN VILLAGE

Status: Both distributor and exhibitor.

Locations: GV Plaza (Plaza Singapura), Tampines Mall, Grand (Great World City), Marina Leisureplex, Bishan, Jurong Point, Yishun and Tiong Bahru

Famous for: Being a collaboration between Golden Harvest (Hong Kong) and Village Roadshows (Australia). Hence the name Golden Village.

Busiest Days: From Thursday to Sunday

Least Busy Day: Monday

Booking Options: Box-office ticketing, ticketing machines at the cinemas, online booking via credit card at http://www.gv.com.sg

Look Out For: Their new, flagship outlet coming your way at the end of next year at Harbour front.

HOOKED’s verdict: This was the most professional of all the cinema companies we visited. They have assured us of consistently premium quality of cinema at all locations. Since they presently have the biggest market share of about 45%, we belive them.

CATHAY

Status: Both distributor and exhibitor

Locations: Orchard (Cathay Cineleisure) and Causeway Point

Famous for: Bringing to us arthouse films. All the movies brought in by their distribution branch called Cathay-Keris can only be watched at the Cathay cinemas. They do not allow their movies to be played at any other cinema houses.

Busiest Day: Saturday

Least Busy Day: Tuesday

Booking Options: Box office ticketing, sale of tickets at Coca-Cola Red Lounge Café, A ticketing kiosk at Orchard MRT, use of PDA ticketing when the queues are too long and online booking at http://tickets.cathay.com.sg/ via credit or debit card.

Look Out For: A new cinema near Dohby Ghaut MRT which will bring back the old Picturehouse. This one’s for the yuppies, you will see.

HOOKED’s verdict: This was the most youth-friendly cinema operator of all. Their outlet at Cineleisure is catered primarily to the youth, with a funky Coca-Cola red lounge, midnight movies all weekdays and 24 hour movies on weekends; you know where to go when you cannot sleep.

BOMBAY TALKIES

Status: Both distributor and exhibitor

Locations: Bedok

Famous for: Being the only exhibitor to show Bollywood movies

Busiest Day: Saturday

Least Busy Day: Thursday

Booking Options: Box-office ticketing, Phone booking (one you book tickets with them, it will be credited immediately. In the event you cannot make it, you can reschedule the tickets for another show)

Look Out For: A different pricing scheme from other cinema companies: $6, $7 on weekends and $8 on weekends. Sometimes it can even go up to $10 for a Sharul Khan movie.

HOOKED’s verdict: What more can we say, for the Bollywood fans, this is your place to go.

HOOKED’s sneak peak into a projection room, courtesy of Golden Village.

A typical projection room.

This is what is called a platter system. One movie usually comes in multiple film reels. A platter system can hold an entire movie at one go which prevents jumps in the movie as the film reels do not have to be changed when fed into the projector when using the platter system.

This is what a typical projector looks like

"Black Hawk Down"

As Usual, I am slow again...but nonetheless, I still managed to catch it.

The official poster on the DVD
Starring Josh Harnett, Eric Bana, Orlando Bloom, Ewan McGregor and others based on the real life story of the Somalian war then in 1993. It is a good one abeit that one may feel a sense of heavy-heartedness at the end. It is so realistic that I cant bear to stay glue to my chair. I dont wish to see such a sight as it makes my blood boil. Nonetheless, I still watch it. It truly depict the humanity as it is. Coward, Bravery, Community forces, war savagery, life and Death. There is one scene that left a big impression on me.
One is the one on the pilot of one of the black hawks down. He was being rescued by two marines. But in the end the community forces of Somalians actually overwhelms them. They fight till the last. But guess wat the somalians did? They actually tear and attack the dead corpse of the marines. Gives me creeps. Seems like a bunch of black ants trying to carry the piece of cake across the floor. This is the imagery that I linked with the scene instantly. Hope this does not offend anyone. (I am not being racist or having any discrimination here but this is how the movie is portryed or rather the director lead audience to think of. Yeah I know the underlying discrimination conscious of the director.)
Following wic they found the pilot and tried to do the same thing to him. I can see that he is scared and he longed to see his wife and child by clutching to their photos.Duno whether it is his luck or not, he was taken hostage by the warlord. Very emotional scene I must say. You can feel his terror and emotions for his family as he fear death..
The director is Ridley Scott. A famous director I must say who actually got funded by Shaw Brothers on a film called "Blade Runner" starring Harrison Ford. I think he like to make a lot of action movies. But nice though.

The Delta Force coming into the Somalian city

Orlando Bloom in his unrecognised state

Josh Harnett

Removing casualties amidst the war and rubbles from the "Black Hawk" down
It makes me wonder after the film whether US actually advocate for peace or do they rush things so that they can get over and done with without proper planning or it is that the situation in war is like that, taking risk as if nobody's business?
I am not sure but this film cetainly left me wondering that.

Dan Brown " Da Vinci Code"

Well, Well...I am a sucker for thrillers especially mind-boggling games and mysteries. This book caught my attention when it hit the bookshelves with an excellent record and rating. I cant wait to get my hands on it but I am busy and damn broke as always as my frenz said. Well...All i can say is that I am bad at finances and life isnt as ez as I wished it would be. I would count myself lucky as I managed to get into Uni.
oK...digress again.....The book is excellent in terms of plot and engagaing the reader into this web of Piory of Scion. It is totally fabulous in terms of that. However, in terms of fleshing out the characters, I feel that it is not well-done. Maybe it is part of the writer's strategies to do that to induce mysteries. I feel a lack of sumthing. But the overall feel is fantastic and it helps me get pass the agony of writing a very challenging term paper that I set out to do. I love this feeling of writing but sometimes it just get on my nerves and it produce this self-doubt in almost all writers. The question of whether we can produce the next best piece. So we constantly push ourselves to do it.
No doubt this is a good book. I like it alot. Wish I had the time and $$$ to buy the next book which I believe is called "Da Vinci Decoded"? I know my network is slow..but hey that's how life is...Sometimes with the limited resource, you got to make the best out of it.
For those who are bent on starting a thriller, this is a good one. I would rate it as 5 out of 5.

Aiya, Wat am I doing?

I think after evaluating my day at 3pm today, I found myself woke up at the wrong side of my bed. Everything juz went wrong on me. Like suddenly, the whole world is on stacking against me. I shall tell u now.

8am

Me rushing to sch. Feel my bag was very light. Shrugged off the feeling n think that the bag without a chunky sweater is lighter. Turn out, I forget to bring my waterbottle and my bread as breakfasr. There goes my breakfast.

8.05am

The 1st funny thing that happen to me. I tot it is funny. Saw my mum waving to me. She stood by the windows with the grilles locked. Looks like I juz visited her from the jail. She look pathetic. Hahaha...juz my imagination. Turn out she tried to call me to stop while my dad try to rush down to bring me the bottle n bread. I misinterpret it.

815am

Switched on my hp. Found my mum calling me...kanna scolded for the forgetfulness.

Pissed off with a guy!

I am very very angry right now. Very Very. Blazing flames surroundidng me. As know, I got to know a lot of guys from the irc. Some of them are psychotic. Some of them are kind, some of them are Sex-depraved and some are juz well...forget it..

This Guy who calls himself Domic Koh is getting on my nerves. I tot it will be juz some casual flirt guy lah..so I went along with him. Turn out he sounds possesive, irritating and over-reaching. He asked me who I am with, wat I do....Ask me if I got miss him, calls me darling, my dear, lastly bibi.....wargh.....then he kip pushing my limit..I have no wish to give him my hp no. I consider it as something personal.

Then he kip asking when I can mit him, give him my hp and even b his gf. I did not feel a sense of security talking to him so how could I give him? I am not nuts or sex-depraved or hua-chi....

He often belittle n feel inferior. That i dun mind coz I think ppl have flaws so being friends should tolerate. But he oftern think that i am laughing at him and his antics. Honestly, I did not. He is feeling insecure not juz me too...Yet he suan me say he is not worthy of my trust. I din not place my trust on him. C'mon, U are the one as well who din trust me!

I tried to laugh my way thru, covering my embarrassment. I am being too protected of myself n yes..I agree to that point. Afterall, I am a girl n I do not wish to fall out with my parents n my family. So sorry to those I have rejected u one way or another. Give me some time to feel comfy with the idea of going out with u.

But u know wat he did? He accuse me of laughing at his expense. he said laugh lah laugh some more...He even accuse me of quarrelling with him several times. I did nothing of sort lor...I tot it is juz tense moments that's all...he kip on blaring at me to laugh.....

THAT'S IT !!!! I had enuff. I tolerated him for so long. I am bz n neglect a lot of pple wic they can understand. Past life

Chapter 1: The Sun

Your Sun is in Leo (Tropical zodiac).

Leo symbolizes the consciousness wherein there is strength, creativity and virility, as well as a certain headstrong or willful nature in how you apply yourself in relationship with others.

For instance, Paige, reading biographical or historical novels about European royalty, daydreaming about the courts of Kings and Queens of modern Europe or ancient times and other grandeurs of the past may bring to your conscious mind memories of previous incarnations when you were at the forefront of things. Hence to this very day there probably remains within you considerable inner strength along with a strong feeling for behind-the-scenes intrigues as well as a powerful sense of individualism. These qualities are probably connected with your past life experiences involved -- directly and indirectly -- with leaders of society and government.

You are also likely to have an above-average interest in the great artistic and spiritual accomplishments of the grand cathedrals and great churches of Britain and Europe, as well as the ancient temples of the Mediterranean world.

Sounds quite true wor....

Picture

Hi, juz want to share somethings with you.
I was attracted by this illustration done by my fave artist.
I fall in love with this kind of illustration style long time ago.
But i think it involves adobe photoshop which i dun think i can do it.

Maybe I am too focused on the negative side liao...
but anyway, I like this pic currently.

Song by me!!!

Pathetic Freedom Paige Tan

Everywhere you go people tell you
Dont do this Dont do that
Government says this is too inappropriate
censor this censor that
Till Everything is so smooth
That you wonder Why do you have to hire a pro

Father says dont carry thing with one hand
Should carry it with both hands
Mother says dont go this path
otherwise you will regret
Even Younger brother has an order for you
I need your things Give it to me

Living in this world is so pathetic
Restrictions and worries everywhere
When you take one step out
Eventually you will retreat two steps behind
Why cant we just move as freely as we should
Why do we need to worry so much
Just for a frightful reponse You are so selfish

Pathetic freedom pathetic live
everyone seems to control you directly or indirectly
You cant even say no
You dont even have a choice
Suffering in silence
Hoping that all this will end swiftly

Strictly for my own expression. If you want it, juz ask!
I dun support piracy especially when its on me!

Play ground downstairs

To further carry out the facts that government have too much $$$$ or for the greater benefit of children....the concrete playground is demolished to give way to plastic n metal type...

Used to rembr when i 1st moved here, i was very much excited by it....I begged my mum to bring me downstairs to play wif the slide, the swing and build castles in the sand. I used to do that when i was in my old house.

I din dare to try the pole sliding. I tot i could get hurt...I regret not trying sia,...I still rembr the joy of playing with them..that's my comp game b4 PC ever arrive...but as age passed..no 1 has the time to go there n swing or even walk around.....i pass by without stopping...

my cousins came by to visit us..n they were thrilled by it...They din even have one back in malaysia...I relive my joy of playing wif it...thru them....thru their eyes ignited by the joy of playing with it...we have fun wif sparklers....fun night it was....laughing n making merry...

I hated when some ignorant kids tried to set fire to it...lucky then get away wif warning from the police....should have give them a few whacks....wonder wat will they do when the see the brand new flammable playground? Hands itchy?

Now seeing the machines removing the slides, demolishing them...my hearts was weighed down by the memories that i have...so touching n fun....happy memories...now gonw wif the wind....cant help it....it seems so vulnerable then it break into pieces..at the hands of machinery...but it seems so solid to me when i was young....

I regret not taking photos of it.....now that it is gone...it is gone forever.....

Time pass, things change, people change, everything will eventually become dust...n fly with the wind.

Lou Yu Qing, my Fave author...

Finally changed my blogskin

I guess I have to change coz it reminds me of the Tsunami situations....yeah....terrible sia...

I know I haven been updating do bear wif me....let me list wat I did for last month ok?

Jan

1. Jan 10th, after I bidded all my modules, I fell sick, aching all over, moving like an old lady n lying in bed for 3days....after that, I become Ali coz I carry a huge Tongkat(umbrella) to school (get the joke? Tongkat Ali???)

2. Went for a Haircut....n sort of temporary straighten my hair...my friends find it amazing as they exclaim, "ur hair so long!"...Maybe I should go n do rebonding huh???....

3.My friends who seen me exclaimed again," U lost weight again!! wat happen??" Guess that's the best part about being sick...coz u eat either marcoroni or porridge for 3 meals sia....

4.Went for a shopping trip wif Vallerie n Clarina....Wah Seh.....they realli superb man...we go out from11am n come home around 11pm sia..my legs so tired..n I am amzed by how much they buy sia....

5. Went out shopping agian wif Vallerie...this time ...me bought a lot of things n watch the "Shall We Dance?" good movie by Richard Gere n J. Lo n Susan Saradon...adapted from Japanese Movie...but lost some original touch of the intimacy n the intricacy of the reflection of society..but on its own, as a reflection to American white-collar lives, Hollywood did a good remake sia....n I end up spending more than Wat I have done so far...horrible....

6. I have watched 1 1/2 b/w movies by hollywood, one is Greta Garbos's " Queen Christina" produced my MGM (now I am super sensitive to production companies). Greta is a good actress, but the Spanish Count n other male counterparts not very appealing wor....then the other half is "Roman Holidays" by Audrey Hepburn (virgin movie) and Gregory Peck...realli good portryal by Audrey n Gregory...now Gregory seems more more nicer, n handsome than the Spanish Count...

U may wonder y I chose to watch b/w movie coz...the lib reserved the newest films like the insider, ferenheit 9/11 to film classes....sian sia....

7. Miz Kexin very much.....hope to c her soon...hehehe...

8. Mit a lot of friends via the irc....but me very blur lor...often forget their names..hope they dun mind....n some of them juz have the intention of....u know lah....wat a world sia...

That's all for a monthly update...will update the next time as soon as I can....

.......
The Angel in me answer subconsciously saying that it makes me a beta person...but have I?
.........
Then the devil reply: Since a person's lifetime is so short y bother to torture urself so much?
.......
Then i am lost for words....I know for the fact that once things is done, it cannot be undone ...but i juz cant help the feeling...I feel that i am still a sinner sumhow....hahaha.....strong words there but self-condemnation is the worst thing that i can do to myself i guess.....i juz cant help myself...as this feeling creeps on when i am feeling sad, lonely and alone....horrible rite? coz most of the time pple are alone by themselves....haiz..i duno where this is leading me to...but i juz dun 1 to end so soon....
